Affectionately known by the Brothers as Frank, Brother Francis Carr comes from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan - Escanaba. It was there, in Holy Names High School, that Frank met the Christian Brothers who taught him. Upon his graduation from high school, Brother Francis Carr, in 1962, went to the Brothers' novitiate in Winona, Minnesota on the campus of Saint Mary's College. The novitiate was called St. Yon - one of St. John Baptist de La Salle's favorite places in France. Throughout his years in initial formation, Frank was influenced by influential Brothers such as Josephus Gregory Roberts. In his early and middle years of active ministry, Brother Francis served as teacher, athletic moderator in the schools where he served. His service has never paused and he continues as "chaplain" to the athletic teams at what is now Saint Mary's University in Winona. Frank served the Midwest District when it was first formed in 1995 as Auxiliary Visitor and later as the Brothers' Visitor. Brother Francis Carr, Visitor, served the District during some difficult and challenging times. He is a man who can make the hard calls that are sometimes necessary. And while he has to do that, he does it as a comforting, calm presence. His love for the Brothers is never doubted. His selfless service has been a model for us. Frank has an incredibly generous sense of hospitality and he opens his home to Brothers who are passing through, to the families and friends of Brothers, and to the athletic teams when he prepares a meal for each of the teams. Frank's love of cooking and baking comes naturally because he grew up with a father who was an accomplished baker by trade. If you are with Frank, you will never be too far from a sweet treat. If you are with Frank, you will enjoy the conversation, the realism, the hope, and the subtle joys of life.
