We remember and pray for our Brother Michael O’Hern, FSC, age 79. Brother Michael died July 11, 2025, in Lake Forest, Illinois.  A De La Salle Christian Brother for 61 years, he was born Michael William O’Hern on May 5, 1946, in Evanston, Illinois. Br. Michael received the Religious Habit in August 1964, in Richmond Heights, Missouri and pronounced his Perpetual Vows – 1975 in Lockport, Illinois. Survivors include his sister Kathleen M. Meuler and the Christian Brothers of the Midwest.

Life

Brother Michael O'Hem, FSC, 79, entered eternal life on July 11, 2025. A De La Salle Christian Brother for 61 years, he was born Michael William O'Hem on May 5, 1946, to Francis M. and Dorothy E. O'Hem (nee Weber) in Evanston, IL. He attended St. George High School in Evanston and entered the Brothers Novitiate in Glencoe, MO, in 1964. He pronounced his first vows in 1965 and made his final profession in 1975. Brother Michael earned his undergraduate degree from Lewis College in Lockport, IL. During his years as a teacher and principal at St. Paul High School in Chicago, he earned two MA degrees, one from Michigan State University and the other from Northwestern University. From 1978 to 1983, he was the Principal at De La Salle Institute in Chicago and in 1983 he became the Director of Catholic Secondary Schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago. During that time, he earned his Executive MBA degree from the University of Chicago. In 1987, and until his retirement in 2017, Brother Michael was an executive at Christian Brothers Investment Services (CBIS) and in 1990 he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until retirement. He served on numerous university boards and received an Honorary Doctorate from Lewis University in Romeoville, IL, in 2002. Survivors include his sister Kathleen M.(Gregory J.) Meuler and his four nephews: Christopher Meuler, David Meuler, Luke Meuler, John Meuler and their families and the De La Salle ChristianBrothers. Visitation will be from 9:30 until 11 :00 on Saturday, July 19, 2025,followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Borromeo Chapel on the campus of Lewis University. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston on Monday, July 21, 2025. Memorials may be made to Christian Brothers, 7650 S. County Line Road, Burr Ridge, IL 60527.
