We remember and pray for our Brother Mark Gubbels, FSC, age 94. Brother Mark diedJune 19, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee. A De La Salle Christian Brother for 66 years, he was born Lavern Mathias Gubbels onJanuary 10, 1931, in Randolph, Nebraska.
He received the Religious Habit in December 1954, in Glencoe, Missouri and pronounced his Perpetual Vows – July 1960 in Plano, Illinois.

Life
Brother Mark Gubbels, FSC, was born January 10, 1931, in thefarm community of Randolph, Nebraska to Matthias and Sophia Gubbels. He was one of six children and is survived byhis brother Melvin. He attended SaintFrancis Grade School and High School in Randolph. He entered the United States Army in March of1952 and was stationed in Korea. He wasdischarged in February of 1954. Laterthat year he entered the De La Salle Christian Brothers’ Novitiate in Glencoe,Missouri, receiving the habit of the Brothers and religious name Brother HowardMark in December. He pronounced hisfirst Vows in December of 1955. From1955 to 1959 he was a student Brother at St. Mary’s College in Winona,Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree. Also, from St. Mary’s he earned a Master’s Degree in Education. Brother Mark had teaching assignments ofReligion, English, Virgil, Cicero, and Economics over his career De LaSalleAcademy in Kansas City, Missouri, Benilde High School in St. Louis Park,Minnesota, Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri, andChristian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tennessee. He had administration assignments at RoncalliHigh School in Omaha, Nebraska, Christian Brothers College High School in St.Louis, Missouri, and La Salle High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the Business Office at ChristianBrothers University. Following hisretirement in 1999, Brother Mark was a volunteer at Holy Names and De La Salleat Blessed Sacrament Jubilee Schools in Memphis. He was a volunteer teacher with the MemphisLiteracy Council, and from 1999 to the winter of 2025 Brother Mark was avolunteer in the office at The Church Health Center. He resided at Christian Brothers Universityuntil February of 2025 and transferred to the Brothers’ Community at ChristianBrothers High School. Following a briefillness, Brother Mark entered eternity from St. Francis Hospital on June 19,2025. A Memorial Mass will be held inthe chapel at Christian Brothers High School on July 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. followedby a burial service held at CalvaryCemetery at the Brothers’ Plot at 1:30 p.m. Memorials of Brother Mark may be directed tothe Church Health Center at 1350 Concourse Avenue, Suite 142, Memphis,Tennessee, 38104: Christian Brothers University, 650 E.
