St. John Baptist de La Salle was ordained as a priest in 1678 and initially served as a Canon in the Cathedral of Reims. Driven by his deep faith and commitment to serving those in need, De La Salle felt called to dedicate himself to the education of disadvantaged youth. His decision to enter religious life was motivated by his desire to fully devote himself to the educational mission and to live a life of service and simplicity. He gave up his wealth and embraced a life of poverty and humility in solidarity with the marginalized communities he served.

There are many types of religious vocations, including the priesthood, monastic life, religious orders, sisterhood and brotherhood, and lay vocations. The unique vocation of religious Brothers in the Catholic Church was formally recognized with an official Vatican document in 2015: “Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church.”

The Call

Vocation begins with a sense of calling, where individuals feel drawn to a life of service, prayer, and religious devotion. This call may manifest through prayer, spiritual experiences, mentorship, or inner conviction. It involves reflection, spiritual direction, and guidance from mentors, religious leaders, and community members. It is a process of exploring one's gifts, passions, and values.

Individuals pursuing religious vocations undergo formation and training to prepare for life in a religious community. This may include theological studies, spiritual formation, community living, practical ministry experience, and adherence to religious vows or commitments. Formation programs vary but they often emphasize spiritual growth, personal development, community life, and integration of religious values into daily living.

Religious communities engage in ministries such as pastoral care, education, healthcare, advocacy, missionary work, spiritual direction, and outreach to marginalized populations.

A Lasallian vocation involves a deep commitment to the spiritual, communal, and service-oriented life dedicated to the values and teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle. It leads individuals on a transformative journey of faith, service, and personal growth, guided by the values of love, compassion, justice, and solidarity with all humanity. Those called to the Lasallian mission dedicate their lives to the spiritual growth and education of young people, regardless of their station in life. Recent studies on young adults talk about the lack of trusted adults in their lives. They want someone to be there for them, to truly listen, to walk with them. Christian Brothers are called to accompany the young and help them discern where God is calling them.
