De La Salle's Vision for the Poor

In discussions with Adrien Nyel, St. John Baptist de La Salle saw the need for the education of poor children. Understanding that a strong education was the only way these children would be able to improve their lives and the lives of their families, and seeing the lack of resources dedicated to these young people, De La Salle saw, and addressed, one of the great areas of need in the France of his time.

The "Area of Greatest Need" refers to the most pressing and critical challenge facing the Christian Brothers of the Midwest today. It is the issue that requires the most urgent attention and resources for the greatest positive impact. Funding for areas of greatest need is essential to fulfilling our mission, to serve our communities effectively, and to achieve long-term impact. These funds provide essential support for day-to-day operations, program delivery, and mission fulfillment. They are crucial for sustaining organizational effectiveness, promoting long-term sustainability, maximizing service, and addressing societal challenges.

The Importance of Equity-Focused Work

By thoroughly assessing the relative importance and urgency of different needs, the Christian Brothers determine which area represents the most critical challenge that demands immediate focus and investment. Addressing this area of greatest need is crucial for the organization to fulfill its mission and have the maximum positive impact on the young people and communities we serve.

Whether caring for our elderly Brothers, expanding and increasing Formation programs, increasing scholarship funds, or any other critical challenge, resources directed toward the area of greatest need allow the Christian Brothers to scale up effective solutions, broaden the reach or depth of services, and develop innovative approaches to the most pressing problems. This approach ensures that the organization's efforts and resources are directed where they can do the most good and create the greatest positive change.
