John Joseph Cooney was born on November 28, 1880, in St. Louis, Missouri, and was a student of the Brothers at Annunciation School in St. Louis and St. Patrick's School in St. Joseph, Missouri. At age thirteen he entered the Juniorate at Glencoe in September of 1893. John received the habit and the religious name of Brother Luke Pascal as he entered the Novitiate on September 18, 1897. Brother Luke began his teaching career at St. Patrick's Academy in Chicago, Illinois, in 1899 and a few years later at De La Salle in the same city. He was appointed Director of the high school department in Glencoe, Missouri, in 1904 and two years later returned to St. Patrick's. His tour of duty took him to C.B.C., St. Joseph, Missouri, 1910 & 1913; Director of De La Salle Academy in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1911; Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, 1914, Novitiate and Scholasticate at Glencoe, 1915-1921 & 1928-1937, St. Mel High School, Chicago, Illinois, 1921-1924, Sub-Director and Director of Glencoe Scholasticate in 1924 & 1925; St. Patrick's High School, Chicago, Illinois, 1927-1928; C.B.C., St. Louis, Missouri, 1937-1938; Boys Town, Director, 1942-1943, Price College in Amarillo, Texas, 1938-1942 & 1943-1959. Brother Luke Pascal died at age seventy-eight and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty-six years.
