Edward J. Hayes was born on March 2, 1875, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Edward and Alice (Clark) Hayes. A pupil of the Brothers at St. Malachy School, Edward was one of the first members of the new Juniorate at Glencoe, Missouri, when he entered on March 20, 1888, at age thirteen. He entered the Novitiate there on August 16, 1890, and received the name of Brother Luke of Jesus. His tour of duty took him first to St. Patrick's High School in Chicago, Illinois, in 1892 and two other assignments took him there a total of seven years. He also taught at Feehanville and De La Salle in Chicago; C.B.C. in St. Louis, Missouri; Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, for thirteen years total; De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for four years total; De La Salle High School in Kansas City, Missouri; Cathedral High School in Duluth and Cotter High School, in Winona, Minnesota; Glencoe, Missouri, for a total of four years; C.B.C. Memphis, Tennessee and C.B.C. in St. Joseph, Missouri; and Boys Town, Nebraska. His specialties over the years were teaching Religion, commercial subjects and sociology. He died at age seventy-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-nine years.
