Eugene Arthur Sullivan was born on July 13, 1916, the son of Daniel Bernard and Catherine (Crowley) Sullivan, in Chicago, Illinois. Gene had two older brothers and one sister and followed his brothers in school to De La Salle High School where he met the Brothers. At the age of fifteen he entered the Juniorate at Glencoe on January 31, 1931 and three and a half years later he was admitted to the Novitiate where he received the habit and the religious name of Brother Julian Mark. His Scholasticate training took place at Glencoe and St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, where he earned his B.A. in History in 1938. Brother Julian Mark's first teaching assignment took him to De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from 1938 to 1942. The remainder of his tour of duty took him to Boys Town, Nebraska, 1942; St. Mel High School, Chicago, 1942-44; as Sub-Director and Assistant Principal at St. George High School in Evanston, Illinois, 1944-47; as Director and Principal at St. Patrick High School in Chicago, 1947-51; as Director and Principal at De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, 1951-56, as founding Director and Principal at Benilde High School, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, 1956-62, as Founding Principal at Newport Catholic High School, Newport, Kentucky, 1962-69, Director of Vaugirard Retreat Center in St. Louis, 1969-70; De la Salle High School in Kansas City, Missouri, 1970-71; recruiter for Christian Brothers College, Memphis, Tennessee, 1971-73, Principal of Bergan High School in Peoria, Illinois, 1973-77; Director of Career Planning and Placement at CBC, Memphis, 1977-81; Director of La Salle Institute Retreat Center, Glencoe, 1981-85; Alumni Director, CBC, St. Louis, 1986-88. Brother Mark, a long time devotee of boxing, died at age seventy-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-seven years.
