Br. Henry Alfred

Francis Horst was born in 1894 and was raised in St. Vincent's Parish in St. Louis, Missouri. He entered the Juniorate in 1908 in Glencoe, Missouri. Francis was one of five children of Joseph and Mary Kallal Horst who emigrated to the United States after the Civil War. On February 17, 1910, he received the habit and the name of Brother Henry Alfred. Brother Henry Alfred was assigned to the Juniorate faculty in 1911, to teach at CBC, St. Louis in 1912, to St. Patrick High School in Chicago in 1913 and to De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1914. As a teacher he excelled in religion, chemistry, physics and mathematics. He was assigned to CBCHS in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1916 for four years and then to Cathedral High School in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1920. His next assignments took him to Joliet in 1924, back to Duluth in 1927, to St Paul in 1929 and then he returned to CBC, St. Louis in 1934. In 1927 he received his B.A. from De Paul University and in 1940 his M.A. from the University of Minnesota. In 1937 Brother Henry returned to De La Salle High School in Minneapolis for two years before being assigned to St. Mel's High School in Chicago for two years. He came to Christian Brothers College in Memphis for nine years, 1941-1950 and then went back to CBC in St. Louis for six years. He taught at Pacelli High School in Stevens Point, Wisconsin in 1956 and began his last assignment at CBC St. Louis in 1958 where he died at age seventy-five, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-nine years.
