Br. Galasian John
Bernard Tuohy was born the son of Thomas and Mary McDermott Tuohy in Galway, Connaught, Ireland, on August 8, 1864. He entered the Juniorate at Montreal on May 2, 1878, and the Novitiate at Carondelet on September 16, 1879, where he received the habit and religious name of Brother Galasian John. Two of his brothers also became Christian Brothers. His brother John became Brother Hugh Matthew, who died in the orphanage fire in Glencoe in 1855, and his brother, Patrick, became Brother Joseph Cassian. Brother Galasian John was assigned to Christian Brothers College in St. Joseph, Missouri, in October of 1880. He contracted tuberculosis and was sent to Santa Fe in December of 1881 because of the warmer climate. He died in Santa Fe at age eighteen, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only two years.
