William and Mary (Henry) Horan gave birth to their son, Martin, on June 22, 1861, in Troy, New York. Martin's parents died and he was sent to the orphanage at Bridgeport in Chicago, Illinois. There, at age fourteen, he sought and received permission to enter the novitiate at Carondelet, where he received the habit and the religious name of Brother Gagius Herman. A year later he was assigned to the elementary class at St. Patrick's School in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1879 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was sent to the infirmary at Carondelet where he died at the age of eighteen, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only four years.
