Seven years later he was named Director of Academy of St. Nicholas at Bernalillo where he remained for twenty-two years. Brother Gabriel retired to the Community of Ancients in Glencoe in 1900 due to illness but rested, for the next two years he helped at De La Salle in Chicago in August of 1900, in Memphis in January of 1902, and in Feehanville in April of 1902. He was assigned to Cretin High School in 1903 where he helped in the school office until 1911 when he was transferred to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1913 he retired for a second time to Glencoe where he died two years later from a series of paralytic attacks, at the age of sixty-seven, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty years.
