James Casey was born on December 24, 1852 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Timothy and Mary Fenlon Casey. At the age of fourteen he entered the Novitiate at Carondelet where he received the robe and the religious name of Brother Eliseus Firmus. He died in the infirmary of the novitiate and was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in St. Louis. In 1934 his remains were moved to Calvary Cemetery in Glencoe, Missouri. He was seventeen at the time of his death and had only been a De La Salle Christian Brother for three years.
