Br. Barsabias

Patrick Ganly was born in September 7, 1821 at Saint John, Ireland, the son of Michael and Bridget Kelly Ganly. Patrick emigrated to the United States and at age of thirty-one entered the religious life, making his Novitiate in Montreal, Canada in 1852. There he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Barsabias. His first teaching assignment was at the school in Toronto from 1852 to 1860 when he was assigned to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1867 he was transferred to the orphanage at Utica, New York, where he served as econome and prefect. There he suffered sunstroke, while working with the students on the farm, which mentally impaired him the remainder of his life. Brother Barsabias was transferred to the orphanage in Albany until he entered a mental asylum conducted for religious in Buffalo. He died at the age of sixty-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for thirty-one years.
