Br. Barnabas Paul

John Broyles was born in New York City in 1914 and entered the Novitiate in Barrytown, New York, in 1930 where he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Barnabas Paul. After earning his bachelor's degree at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., his first teaching assignments were at St. Patrick's School in Newburgh, New York, and then at St. Augustine's High School and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, both in Brooklyn, New York. In 1951 he was appointed Director at St. Augustin's and in 1954 he was appointed Director of Bishop Loughlin. Upon his return from the Second Novitiate in Rome in 1958, he was appointed Director of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, New York. After two years each at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey, and as Director of Development at the New York District Provincialate, he was appointed Director of the Christian Brothers Conference National Office in Lockport, Illinois. In 1971 he was appointed to the Brothers' world headquarters in Rome, Italy, as Secretary for Education for the English-speaking Brothers, serving briefly in 1974 as Acting President of the newly established Bethlehem University. On his return to the United States in 1977, he became administrative assistant at La Salle School in Albany, New York, where he died on August 8, 1993. He was seventy-nine years of age and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty-three years.
