John Cummins was born in Kildare, Ireland, on October 20, 1843, the son of John and Ann Nolan Cummins. He emigrated to the United States at age twenty-four entered the Novitiate of the Brothers at Carondelet, where in January of 1867 he received the robe and the religious name of Brother Antonian Patrick. He was assigned in St. Louis in June of 1867. One year later he died at St. Patrick's High School in Chicago. He was twenty-five years old and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only a year and a half.
