Born the son of Denis and Anne McElroy Tierney on November 1, 1850, in Boston, Massachusetts, Bernard Tierney, at age seventeen entered religious life at the Brothers' Novitiate at Carondelet, Missouri. There he received the habit and the religious name of Brother Altinian. In July of 1868 he was sent to teach in Chicago but in 1872 his health caused him to be sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, to recover. He returned to the north in April of 1873 to CBC, St. Louis, Missouri, but died of tuberculosis in October of that same year. Brother Altinian was twenty three years old and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for six years.
