James Tiernan was on June 25, 1835, in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and entered the Novitiate in New Orleans at age thirty. There he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Alfred of Mary. He was assigned to teach at St. Mary's School in New Orleans and at St. Vincent's Academy in Jefferson City (New Orleans). He contracted yellow fever during the epidemic of 1867 and died at age thirty-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only two years.
