Brother Philip served as the 10th Superior General of the Institute from his election in 1838 until his death in 1874.  During his thirty-eight years as head of the world wide congregation he saw much expansion of the work of the Brothers.  In January of 1864, it was Brother Philip who split the American Province into two separate Districts, one of Canada and the other the District of the United States.  He died at age eighty-two in his sixty-fifth year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
