Brother Owen was sent to New Orleans to teach at St. Mary's Academy after completing his Novitiate. While working there he contracted consumption and he died there on January 19, 1859, at the young age of twenty-five and in only his fourth year as a De La Salle Christian Brother. The necrological calendar for the District of New Orleans marks his date of death as the 29th of January.
