Matthew Szatkowski was born in Chicago, Illinois where he attended De La Salle Institute. He entered the Novitiate in Glencoe, Missouri and completed his B.A. degree at St. Mary’s College in Winona. Later he was to receive his M.Ed. at St. Mary’s, his M.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his MFA at Memphis State University. Brother Matt’s first teaching assignment was at his alma mater, De La Salle in Chicago in 1962. A year later he taught at Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri and in 1964 he was assigned to Roncalli High School in Aroura, Illinois. In 1966 he returned to CBHS in St. Joseph, Missouri but one year later was assigned to Bishop Gallagher High School, Harper Woods, Minnesota. Eight years later Brother Matt returned to De La Salle in Chicago for two years and then was assigned to Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison, Illinois. In 1982 he was assigned to teach at Driscoll again where he spent the next four years. In 1987 he accepted an assignment at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, where he spent the rest of his teaching career. Brother Matt retired in 2009 and in 2010 he moved to Cathedral Community in Los Angeles, California. Health concerns forced him to move to Villa Scalabrini in Sun Valley, California. He died on January 27, 2015 at age seventy-four having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-seven years.
