David Kirby was born on March 3, 1877, in Kerry Read, County Kerry, Ireland. He entered the Novitiate at Castletown at age twenty in 1897. He was transferred to Glencoe, Missouri, where his formation continued until he was assigned to the orphan institution at Feehanville in 1898. He returned to Glencoe in October of 1899 but in August of 1900 headed southwest where he worked for the next thirteen years at Bernalillo and Santa Fe. Brother Luke returned to the midwest in 1913 to St. Louis where he worked at Glencoe, Christian Brothers College High School and St. Alphonsus. He remained at St. Alphonsus from 1913 to 1925 when he was assigned to Minneapolis. In 1929 he was transferred to St. Patrick High School in Chicago where he died at the age of fifty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for thirty-four years.
