Br. Ladislaus Cyril

Brother Ladislaus attended the College of St. Jerome in Ontario but returned home to help with the family furniture business when his father became ill. After his father's death, he immigrated to the United States, became a citizen and for almost twenty years worked in his trade as a carpenter and cabinetmaker in one of the largest furniture factories in the United States. Brother Ladislaus joined the Novitiate at age forty-three and was a cabinet maker by trade, a master at the art of fine wood carving. When he completed his Novitiate in Glencoe, Missouri, he remained there making book cases, vestment bureaus, repairing the woodwork and working on the new addition to the Novitiate. In 1916 he went to De La Salle High School, Chicago, where be built the bookcases and all of the clothes closets in the new Brothers' residence. He also served in at Christian Brothers College High School, St. Louis, Missouri, and at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, where his beautiful carpentry and cabinet work can still be seen. One of seven children, three of his sisters became nuns in the Congregation of St. Joseph. Brother Ladislaus died at age seventy-three and in his thirtieth year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
