Br. Jovian Patrick
Brother Jovian Patrick was born at Ross, Kiltyclogher, County Fermanagh, Ireland, on September 11, 1885. He entered the Novitiate at Castletown, Ireland, at age 21 on September 15, 1906, and the following month was sent to Glencoe to complete his Novitiate and to study for his teaching certificate. In 1908 he was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee, and later that year to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1912 he moved to St. Patrick's High School in Chicago. Twelve years later he returned to Memphis but one year later he transferred to De La Salle High School in Chicago. In 1926 he was assigned to Cotter High School in Winona and later that same year to De La Salle High School in Minneapolis. He received his BA from DePaul University in 1927 and was assigned to the faculty in Glencoe, Missouri. In 1936 he moved to Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis but began showing signs of mental stress which progressed until in 1942, upon recommendation of his physician he went to St. Vincent's Hospital, conducted by the Daughters of Charity. He remained in this sanitarium for the next twenty-one years working in the hospital library. He died of heart failure at age seventy-eight in his fifty-seventh year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
