Brother Josephus was twenty-six years of age when he entered the Novitiate at Carondelet. From 1881 until 1899 he taught in St. Louis, Missouri, at St. Bridget, St. John, and St. Lawrence Schools. In 1900 he ventured to Memphis, Tennessee, to teach for a year and in 1901 to De La Salle High School in Chicago, but returned to St. Louis, Missouri, to St. Alphonsus Rock Church School later that same year. From 1905 to 1911 and again from 1913 to 1918 he served in Kansas City, Missouri, with the years in between at Winona, Minnesota. In 1918 an attack of "paralysis put an end" to his active career and he joined the "company of our venerable Brother Ancients of Glencoe." He remained there until his death on January 22, 1923, at age sixty-nine and in his forty-third year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
