Brother Joseph was elected Assistant to the Superior General in 1874 and ten years later became the 12th Superior General of the Institute, a post he held until his death in 1897. In 1885, shortly after his election as Superior General the Brothers purchased a piece of property in Glencoe, Missouri, and Brother Joseph donated 200,000 francs to help in building a novitiate on the site. He died at age seventy-four and in his fifty-ninth year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
