Br. Joel Paulian

John and Helena (Darcy) Dolan gave birth to their son, James, on April 6, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois. He made his Novitiate in Glencoe and completed his college degree at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota. Brother Joel’s first teaching assignment took him in 1948 to De La Salle High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent two years there before being assigned to St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Illinois. In 1952 he moved across town to St. Mel High School in Chicago. He spent only one year there and was transferred to Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota where he taught for two years before being assigned in 1954 to St. Peter High School in Jefferson City, Missouri. Three years later he was assigned to Benilde High School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He returned to Chicago and St. Patrick High School in 1963 where he remained until 1970 when he spent one year at Lewis University before coming back to St. Patrick for a year. In 1972 he was assigned to St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Illinois. He returned to Lewis University in Romeoville in 1974 but for a fourth time he went back to St. Patrick High School in 1976 where he spent the next nine years. In 1985 Joel was assigned again to Lewis University where he worked until 1998. Joel was assigned to St. Joseph High School in 1998 where he spent a year before returning to Lewis University for eight years. In 2007 he moved to the La Salle Community in Romeoville, Illinois where he retired. In 2015 he entered the Mercy Circle in Chicago where he died on December 12, 2015, at age eighty-nine. At the time of his death, he had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for seventy years.
