James Niland was born on April 27, 1858, the son of John and Mary Fahey Niland in Ireland and emigrated to the United States. In 1880, at age twenty-two he sought admission to the Brothers' Novitiate at Carondelet. He was besieged by whooping cough, diphtheria and finally by consumption and died on July 14, 1881. He was only twenty-three years old and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only one year.
