Br. Jerome Anthony
Brother Jerome Anthony was born the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Hurley Devitt. He entered the Juniorate after completing two years at Cretin High School in St. Paul. He entered the Novitiate in June of 1922 and received the habit of the Brothers in August of that same year. He remained in Glencoe to complete his Scholasticate training and was assigned to St. Mel High School in Chicago in 1924 to teach English and history. In 1927 he was assigned to Cathedral High School in Duluth, in 1928 to Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri, and in 1929 he returned to St. Mel High School. It was in 1927 that he completed his Ph.B at DePaul University. In 1931 he moved across the city to teach at De La Salle High School in Chicago and in 1934 he was assigned as Sub-Director at De La Salle High School in Minneapolis. In 1938 he was transferred to St. George High School in Evanston, Illinois, and a year later he was assigned to St. Mary's College in Winona. He completed his M.A. in 1940 at the University of Minnesota and was assigned in 1941 to De La Salle High School in Minneapolis as Director. In 1945 he returned once again to St. Mel as teacher and Sub-Director and in 1949 he returned to St. Mary's in Winona to teach his beloved mathematics. He continued his graduate work at both Loyola (1945) and De Paul (1953-4) in the Chicago area and in 1954 was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1956 he traveled to Price College in Amarillo to teach mathematics but returned to St. George High School in Evanston where he served until his final assignment at Cretin High School in 1962. Brother Jerome Anthony remained at Cretin until when on February 1, 1972, as a result of a heart condition, he died. He was sixty-seven years old and in his fifty-first year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
