Brother I. Richard received his B.A. degree from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois, in 1928 and immediately began a teaching career of thirty-seven years during which he taught and prefected at St. Mary's Training School in Feehanville, Illinois; St. Joseph's Commercial College in St. Joseph, Missouri; Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, Missouri; Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee; De La Salle High School in Chicago, Illinois; and Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota at night and on weekends while maintaining a full teaching schedule of classes. He retired to La Salle Institute, Glencoe, Missouri, in 1937 where he spent the next thirty-one years supervising the farm, dairy and grounds, including the Brothers' cemetery where he was to be laid to rest upon his death. Bishop James J. Byrne of Dubuque, Iowa, credited his former teacher, Brother I. Richard, with his vocation to the priesthood. Brother Richard died at age ninety-one and was in his sixty-seventh year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
