Br. Hugh Matthew
Brother Hugh was born on May 5, 1881 at Castlewellin, County Down, Ireland, the son of James and Darah Doran McKibbin. After several years of study and teaching in the national schools of Ireland he met Brother Adjutor and entered the Novitiate in 1906 at the age of twenty-five, receiving the habit of the Brothers on December 8, 1906. In 1907 he was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1911 he was appointed Director at St. Bridget's in St. Louis. At the end of that year he was sent to De La Salle High School in Chicago. In 1913 he returned to the College in St. Louis and in 1915 he was appointed Sub-Director of the Novitiate. At age thirty-nine he became a victim of the influenza epidemic of 1920 and died on February 7th of that year. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery at Glencoe, Missouri. He was in his fourteenth year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
