Brother Hilary Francis graduated with honors from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, in 1931 with his B.A. degree. He was a principal and teacher at De La Salle Institute, Chicago, for nineteen of his short thirty-one years as a Brother. He also served in Amarillo, Texas, and in Missouri at Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, and Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis. Early in his career the doctors discovered he had active T.B. and "despite the terrific pain that he must have undergone during part of this illness, he rarely manifested by any sign an indication of what he was enduring.  His patience in suffering was truly heroic." He was buried with full military honors by the cadet corps of Christian Brothers High School of St. Louis in the Brothers' cemetery at Glencoe, Missouri. He was forty-nine years old when he died and was in his twenty-first year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
