Br. Hilarien

Brother Hilarien entered the Order in 1833 and for the next sixteen years taught and worked at schools in the Clermont District. In 1849 he became the first Director of the boarding school in Clermont. His career continued in schools throughout France until in 1859 when, in response to the request of Bishop Lamy of Santa Fe, New Mexico, he was designated Director of the group of four Brothers sent to open a school in Santa Fe. He became the founder of St. Michael's in Santa Fe and worked tirelessly there until his health failed him in 1862, when he was forced to return to France. During the next twenty-nine years continued his service to his District of Clermont while partially retired there. He died at age eighty-four in his fifty-eighth year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
