In 1853, after directing two schools in Europe, Brother Hermenegilde came to Canada, where he directed communities in Quebec and Montreal. From 1869 to 1881 he was Visitor of Colombo on the isle of Ceylon. Brother Hermenegilde spent only a little over a year in the St. Louis District with the mission of collecting documents pertinent to the history of houses in the land, during which he experienced a great deal of illness. From January to May of 1882 he recuperated at Carondelet and from May 1882 to April 1883 at Glencoe, Missouri. He moved to the Bridgeport Orphan Asylum in Chicago for a few months in 1883 for medical treatment and on to Baltimore in April. He returned to France shortly thereafter to the retreat house at Fleury, dying in 1890 at age seventy-five and in his forty-seventh year as a De La Salle Christian Brother.
