Thomas Hurley attended Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minneapolis where he proved himself an outstanding athlete and honor student. He entered the Novitiate upon his graduation in June of 1946 and received the habit of the Brothers on December 8th of that same year. He made his last appearance in the Glencoe chapel on the day on which he pronounced his first vows. He became seriously ill with fever and was confined to his room. In January he was moved to Alexian Brothers Hospital in St. Louis where he was to spend the last five weeks of his life, dying on February 1, 1948, at the early age of nineteen and in his second year as a De la Salle Christian Brother. After funeral services in the Cathedral of Saint Michael in St. Paul, Brother Harold Bertram was buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota.
