Br. Drostan Alban

Patrick Mahony was born on April 10, 1883, at Balkenbrack, Dunmanway County, Cork, Ireland. His sister entered the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and was for many years Mother Superior of a convent in Texas. He worked on his father's farm for five years before entering the Novitiate at Castletown, Ireland, in 1902, at the age of fifteen. There he received the habit and the religious name of Brother Drostan Alban on November 1, 1902. While in training in the Irish house of formation in 1904, he responded to an appeal for volunteers to teach in the U.S. He arrived at Glencoe and entered the Scholasticate training and upon completion was placed in charge of St. Mary's Training School in Feehanville, Illinois, a home for orphan boys. In 1906 he was assigned to St. Vincent's School in St. Louis, Missouri, until 1911 when he was assigned to St. Alphonsus in the same city. Brother Drostan was appointed to Heffron High School in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1914 and in 1918 to St. Mel High School in Chicago, Illinois. He was a part of the founding community at St. Mel's and spent the rest of his life in service to that school. He died from an injury sustained from a fall at the age of sixty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for forty-five years.
