Herman Sutter was born on October 12, 1935 in St. Joseph, Missouri, one of five children of Fred and Georgia Sutter. Herman attended both Cathedral Grade School and Christian Brothers High School in St. Joe. He graduated from high school in 1953 and entered the novitiate in Glencoe in 1958 after having attended the Gard Business School and worked for several years for the M.K. Goetz Brewing Company. In 1954 he began his undergraduate courses at St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota. Brother Denis received his first teaching assignment at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tennessee in 1960. Two years later he had completed his BA degree through St. Mary’s College and was transferred to Helias High School in Jefferson City, Missouri, where he remained until 1966 when he was assigned for a year at the House of Studies in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1967 he returned home to St. Joseph, Missouri, to teach at his alma mater, Christian Brothers High School. In 1970 Brother Denis returned to Christian Brothers High School in Memphis where he was to spend the next twenty-seven years and during that time completed his M.Ed. at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1979. His last teaching assignment brought him for the second time to Helias High School in Jefferson City in 1997. It was there in 2008 his health began deteriorating as he struggled with Parkinson’s. He died in the care of his sister, Betty, in her home in St. Joseph, Missouri. Denis was seventy-four years of age, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-two years.
