Br. Cyril of Mary
Edward Norris was born on October 27, 1845, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Thornton Norris at Athboy, Ireland. Edward, at age twenty, was one of the young men recruited in Ireland for the Brothers' Novitiate at Second Street in New York City. He crossed the sea, entered the Novitiate and completed his first year with the Brothers, receiving the habit and the religious name of Brother Cyril of Mary by August of 1865. He taught one year in Philadelphia and 1867 he was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri. He remained there until 1872 when his health forced him to be assigned to Prairie-du-Chien where he could rest. In July of 1872 he returned to St. Louis where he died in July at age twenty-seven, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only seven years.
