In 1868 Brother Calixtus Joseph was brought from Troy, New York, his first teaching assignment, to open the new school of Saint James in New York City. Only one year later he was sent to St. Louis, Missouri, where he was to assume the direction of the schools of St. Mary and St. Joseph in the quarter formerly under the name of the French colony, Carondelet. His career of forty-seven years was to include work in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1872; Prairie-du-Chien, Wisconsin, 1875; St. Patrick's High School in St. Louis, 1877 and St. Patrick's High School in Chicago, Illinois, 1878, as well as Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis in 1879. He taught music throughout his career and loved to use it to "giving spark to religious ceremonies." He died at age sixty-two in 1909 and in his forty-seventh year as a De La Salle Christian Brother and is buried in Calvary Cemetery at Glencoe, Missouri.
