Br. Adrian Philip

James Gerard O'Brien was born the son of Patrick and Josephine O'Callahan O'Brien on May 21, 1921, in New York City. He graduated from Ascension School and attended La Salle Academy for three years before entering the Juniorate at Barrytown in 1938. James received the robe and entered the Novitiate in September of 1939 and the religious name of Brother Adrian Philip. He received his B.A. from Catholic University of America and his master's from Manhattan College in 1951. Brother Adrian Philip received his doctoral degree in English from St. John University in 1959. Brother Adrian taught at St. Cecilia's and Bishop Loughlin high schools, both in Brooklyn. He also taught at La Salle - Troy, La Salle - Providence, St. Peter's, La Salle Academy, and CBA-Syracuse. From 1964-1974 he taught at Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee. Brother Adrian Phil returned to New York where he was to serve as a Guidance Counselor at CBA-Lincroft, St. Raymond, and La Salle Academy, before joining the community at Manhattan and working in the District Archives. He was eighty years old when he died, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty-three years.
