Bernhard Fark was born on June 12, 1821, in Morthwalde, Allemagne, Prussia. He emigrated to the United States and settled in St. Louis, Missouri, where at age twenty-nine, he entered the Novitiate on Cerre Street in St. Louis on February 19, 1850. Here he received the robe of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Nicholas. One year later he was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers College in St. Louis and remained there for seventeen years, eventually becoming Sub-Director of the Community and Inspector of Schools for the Brothers' schools in the St. Louis area. In 1868 he was named Director of St. Patrick's school in St. Louis but ten years later was forced, for health reasons, to move to Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee. Here he became Sub-Director in 1889 but in 1895 he contracted pneumonia that led to his death at age of seventy-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for forty-five years.
