Br. Martin Winifred
Jerome Klietz was born on October 19, 1938, in St. Paul, the son of Clyde and Marguerite Klietz, and was the oldest of three children. Jerome attended St. Agnes High School in St. Paul and a year after graduation entered the Novitiate at Glencoe, Missouri. There he received the religious name of Brother Martin Winifred. He completed his Scholasticate studies at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, and received his first teaching assignment at Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. His tour of duty also includes: La Salle High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; the New Way Project in Winona, Minnesota; the Guadalupe Area Project in St. Paul, Minnesota; and the Catholic Education Center of the Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis. He received his master's degree in Social Justice at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, and joined the Diocese of Superior, Wisconsin, in the Religious Education Office. After four years there he became Director of Religious Education for the Diocese of Cheyenne, Wyoming. His father joined him there and accompanied him on his visits to schools and parishes from 1986 to 1992 when they both were killed in an automobile accident in Rawlings, Wyoming. Brother Martin was fifty-four years old at the time of his death and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for thirty-five years.
