John Carroll was born on June 20, 1848 in Bellygurteen, Kilkenny, Ireland, the son of Michael and Mary Hughes Carroll. John's younger brother, Richard, had entered the order in 1873 (later to become Brother Athanasius of Sebaste) and a year later, John entered the Novitiate at Carondelet where he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Lucistian. He entered the Brothers' life at age twenty-six and began teaching almost immediately at St. John's elementary school in St. Louis. He contracted tuberculosis and died in the infirmary of the novitiate at age twenty-nine, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only three years.
