Henry John Brandewiede was born on April 27, 1851, the son of John and Johanna Berens in Cincinnati, Hamilton County. His family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Henry John was a graduate of the Commercial Department of Christian Brothers College in St. Louis. On April 9, 1878, he sought admission to the Novitiate of the Brothers at Carondelet where he received the habit in April of 1879. He was assigned at the College in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1879-1880, 1881-1883, 1984-1885 and 1895-1919. His teaching skills led him to teach at Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1880-1881, 1886-1919, 1897-1899, 1902-1903 and from 1911 to 1928 when he died. He also taught at St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1883-1885, at Memphis in 1889-1892, at New Orleans from 1892-1895 and at Feehanville in 1903-1904. Brother Leonidas taught at St. Pat's in Chicago in 1899-1902 and at Santa Fe from 1904-1905. He died at age seventy-seven having suffered rheumatism for the last twenty-five years of his life, and having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty years.
