Br. Jovian Francis Walsh
James Raphael Walsh was born on October 1, 1923, the son of Francis A. and Helen Catherine Dolan Walsh in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from La Salle Institute in Glencoe and entered the Novitiate there in 1942. He earned his B.S.S. degree from St. Mary’s University in Winona, his M.A. from DePaul University in Chicago and his Ph.D. from St. Louis University in Missouri. His first teaching assignment took him to St. Patrick High School in Chicago in 1945 and on to Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1948. He moved to Cretin High School in St. Paul in 1950 and to Price High School in Amarillo, Texas in 1956. He was assigned to St. Mel High School in Chicago in 1956 and moved in 1960 to Helias High School in Jefferson City, Missouri. His next assignment took him to St. Mary’s College in Winona where he spent seven years until he moved to St. Louis University in 1967. Three years later he was back at St. Mary’s and remained there until 1983 when he was appointed Auxiliary Provincial for the St. Paul/Minneapolis District. He spent a year at the University of San Diego in California and moved to Christian Brothers Community in Hyattsville Maryland where he retired in 1993. In 2007 he returned to Winona where he remained until his death on August 5, 2015 at the age of ninety-two having been a De La Salle Christian Brothers for seventy-two years.
