James Kent was born on November 23, 1877 in Covington, Kentucky, the son of Michael and Margaret Boland Kent. James was admitted to the Juniorate at Glencoe, Missouri, at age eleven on June 15, 1889, and progressed to the Novitiate there in January of 1893. A persistent cough afflicted him but in February 1894 he began his Scholasticate studies in Glencoe. In September of 1894 he was sent to Bernalillo, New Mexico, with the thinking that the dry climate might relieve his suffering. He returned to Glencoe in May of 1895 and was assigned to St. Patrick's High School in 1896 where he served as an aid in the school and community. Brother Josephus Gregory died in August of 1897 at the age of twenty, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only seven and a half years.
