He emigrated to the United States and at age twenty-seven sought admission to the Brothers Novitiate at Carondelet. In 1874 he was admitted and received the robe of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother John of the Cross. His first teaching assignment brought him to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri, for nine years. In 1883 he was transferred to Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee, and remained there for seven years. From 1900 to 1902 he was Sub-Director of the Orphanage at Feehanville, Illinois, but was reassigned to CBC, St. Louis, in August of 1902. He suffered a liver ailment and rheumatism and in 1908 he was sent to Memphis to recover from a bout of typhoid fever. In August of 1909, while home in Cincinnati for a family visit, he died. He was sixty-one years old and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for thirty-five years.
