James Reade was born in Canada in 1829 and entered the Novitiate in Montreal at age twenty in 1849, where he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Hugh of Mary. He was assigned to teach in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was Sub-Director of the community there when he fell victim to the yellow fever and died in August of 1853 at the young age of twenty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only four years.
