Br. Hilary Anselm
Joseph Hoffman's mother and father, Barbara and Joseph, were born in Hungary as was his oldest brother. His three sisters were born in North Dakota and he was born in Chicago. He entered the Glencoe Juniorate after only one semester in high school at De La Salle in Chicago. Joseph received the habit and his religious name of Brother Hilary Anselm on August 30, 1934. He completed his A.B. degree at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, in 1938 and was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. From 1940 to 1942 he taught at De La Salle Academy in Kansas City, Missouri. Brother Anselm received his M.Ed. from St. Louis University in 1950. He taught or was a counselor at Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, four times, 1942 to 1945, 1960 to 1965, 1969 to 1975, and 1976 to 1980. From 1945 to 1949 he taught at Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and returned to teach there again from 1952 to 1956, but from 1956-58 he was assistant principal at De La Salle High School in Chicago and in the same city at St. Patrick's High School from 1958 to 1960. In 1965 he was assigned to Hill High School in St. Paul as a guidance counselor and in 1967 as Principal at Brady High School in West St. Paul. In 1975 he worked for a brief period of time in the College Relations Office of St. Mary's College. He retired in 1980 and died in 1998 at age eighty-two, having been a De la Salle Christian Brother for sixty-four years.
