Jean Lavergne was born on April, 22, 1832, at Descalvata, France, and made his Novitiate at Clermont at age nineteen in 1851. He volunteered to come to America with Bishop Lamy. He arrived in Santa Fe in 1859 and became Director of Saint Michael's and eventually Visitor of the Santa Fe District from 1867 until 1869. Brother Geramius left New Mexico in 1869 for Quito, Ecuador, and in 1879 he returned to his homeland, France, where he died at age seventy-three, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-four years.
